1) Posting in OPD, ward, OT, refraction unit, orthoptics and binocular vision units, lab and peripheral services;
2) Hands-on in clinical work-up, diagnostics, lab investigations and wet lab;
3) Participation in didactic lectures, seminars, interdisciplinary meetings, journal clubs and case presentations;
4) Participation in research, publication, professional meetings, workshops, conferences and CMEs.

Sankara Geuder Competence Centre (SGCC)
Though nearly 900 ophthalmologists trained in India every year, it is estimated that India needs 25,000 ophthalmologists by 2020 to achieve goals of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight. Apart from increasing the number of fresh ophthalmic surgeons, it is imperative that the productivity of practicing ophthalmologists be increased significantly so that they function more efficiently and effectively.
A unique partnership between a leading European Ophthalmic Equipment manufacturer Geuder, AG of Heidelberg, Germany and SAV has helped create an infrastructure that would provide training for ophthalmologists in Cataract Surgery and VR techniques under supervision. It would also provide for training of Biomedical Engineering field staff and paramedical staff of users in a clinical environment.
CURRENT TRAINING OFFERED:
Phacoemulsification Short term Training (Ophthalmologists)
This is an on-going programme with over 40 surgeons trained from as far as Bangalore, Patna, Chennai, Hubli, Bagalkote, Koppal, Nammakal, Mysore, Calicut, Bijapur, Mangalore, Kolar and Rajasthan. The training is offered in 2 modules the basic course for 1 month, requires the surgeon to be proficient in tunneling, rhexis and hydro procedures. The surgeons should have a minimum experience 300 MSICS and a Post-graduation Qualification recognized by MCI.
An advanced course of 15 Days is offered to surgeons familiar with phacoemulsification who wish to hone their techniques or learn more modern concepts in phacoemulsification surgery.

Vitreoretina Training (Ophthalmologists)
The department offers a surgical retina fellowship in Vitreoretina and ocular oncology affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. There are 2 intakes – July and December.
Leveraging on the expertise of our faculty and the large variety of cases handled at our hospital, we offer observer ships to vitreoretinal surgeons from India and overseas.
The institution also provides a wet lab experience and allows surgeons to train and practise under supervision conversion to 23G Vitrectomy.

Diploma in Vision Care Technician
This diploma programme is designed with NCVRT to provide the much needed human resource needed to assist the ophthalmologist in the Outpatient Clinics, Operation Theatre and during Outreach Screening Camps. The specialised programme makes the candidate focus on various aspects of eye care delivery with an almost assured placement in eye care institutions.
Eligibility: Female candidates who have completed PU/10+2.
Duration of the course: 2 years (1+1)
- During the first year, you will be mostly listening to the lectures in a digitalized class room with adequate training on curriculum based skills.
- In Second year, you will became an Intern, where the opportunity to practice hands on activities under supervisory.

The course would allow the participant to learn the art and Science of ophthalmic dispensing which includes frame selection, lens designs, scientific fitting and trouble shooting in case of contingencies.

Optometry Internship (1 year) Certificate
INTERNSHIP IN OPTOMETRY
Our Optometry Internship Course offers a comprehensive curriculum aimed at providing students with hands-on experience, clinical competence, and professional development opportunities. Through clinical rotations in diverse settings, participants will refine their skills in vision screenings, eye exams, and diagnostic techniques, while also gaining insight into various treatment modalities and patient care strategies.
Interns get an opportunity to practice in optometry specialties like Contact Lens, Vision therapy, Low vision, and Vision Rehabilitation. With guidance from experienced optometrists and networking opportunities within the field, students will be well-prepared to navigate their future careers in optometry with confidence and proficiency.
DURATION: 12 months
INTAKE: January, April, July, October
LOCATION: Coimbatore, Bangalore, Shimoga, Guntur, Anand, Krishnankoil, Ludhiana, Jaipur, Kanpur, Indore, Panvel and Hyderabad
ELIGIBILITY: Completed 3rd year or 6th semester of B.Optometry from a recognized college/university.
